KANSAS CITY, MO — Today, our founder, Chris Motley, and the Better Weekdays team are proud to receive the 2016 Governor’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award presented by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon!
In February 2014, we decided to move our company to St. Louis from Chicago after being selected for the Spring 2014 Class of Capital Innovators, a top tech accelerator. We chose to stay in the region after receiving an Arch Grant in June 2015 and participating in Pipeline Entrepreneurs, a fellowship organization of high-performing entrepreneurs funded in part by the Kauffman Foundation. Since relocating from his hometown, Chris has embarked on a journey to tap into the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Missouri and develop strong, mutually beneficial relationships with its leaders. He brought the Better Weekdays team together under the vision of creating career pathways and the mission of reducing the friction in the job search and recruiting process. Today, we would like to thank all of the organizations that have supported us in our mission by opening their network, using our products and services, and making capital contributions to our venture.
In the last year, support from Missouri Technology Corporation (MTC) afforded us the opportunity to close our seed round of funding from investors in both St. Louis and Chicago. MTC’s matching funds provided the spark that our business needed to pursue our strategy for the region. The non-profit organization, Insight St. Louis, dedicated to recruiting the best graduates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to the St. Louis region, piloted our platform for their annual Career Exploration program. This opportunity integrated candidate matching services into the recruiting processes of Insight St. Louis’ member companies including Dot Foods, Centene Corporation, Edward Jones and Wells Fargo. Members of the recruiting team at these companies provided tremendous support by working with us through our design thinking processes to inform our product development efforts for corporate clients.
Additionally, local universities including Washington University, Harris-Stowe State University, Maryville University, Lincoln University and Webster University gave us the opportunity to work with their staff, students and graduates to enhance their career services efforts. Through the thousands of users that have signed up from these universities and continue to use our services, we have captured feedback that has allowed us to improve the job seeker experience and increase engagement when searching for internship and job opportunities.
In the near future, we plan to continue moving the region’s talent initiatives forward through our recently announced partnership with the St. Louis Regional Chamber, which has dedicated resources for us to aggregate internships, jobs, and mentors. These resources allow us to support career success for the region’s students and graduates by executing on our mission to reduce friction in the job search and recruiting process by leveraging technology to create sustainable career pathways. “Talent attraction, retention and inclusion are critical to the competitiveness of the state, and we are humbled to be a part of the innovation community to move the region forward,” Motley said. Our team will be integrating recruitment marketing services to help employers attract, engage and discover relevant candidates well before they decide to apply.
The decision to move to Missouri changed the course of our company and created opportunities to grow our business. This award is a great honor not only for Chris and the team at Better Weekdays, but also for the ‘village’ of individuals that have helped us along the way. Chris has often said that our success is a function of our commitment and those willing to collaborate with us. We look forward to expanding our efforts throughout the state and scale across the country.
